WhatPing

WhatPing vs Better Stack

Start here: Better Stack is a real product with a real company behind it

It probes from multiple regions, it has incident management with on-call schedules and escalation policies, it has hosted status pages, it phones you, and there is a support team and a contract. For a team where being paged reliably is someone’s job, that is worth money and WhatPing does not replace it.

Where Better Stack wins

  • Multi-region probing. Checks from many locations, with regional confirmation before an incident opens. WhatPing has one probe location plus a single independent second opinion. This is the biggest real difference and it is not close.
  • On-call scheduling and escalation. Rotations, escalation policies, acknowledgement, handoffs. WhatPing has none of this.
  • Phone calls and SMS. When email and push are not enough. WhatPing has neither.
  • Status pages. Hosted, custom-domain, subscriber notifications. WhatPing has none.
  • Incident management. Timelines, postmortems, integrations with the rest of your stack.
  • Log management and metrics in the same platform.
  • A company. Support, uptime commitments, an SLA you can point at, and someone to escalate to. WhatPing is one developer, in beta, with no SLA.

Where WhatPing wins

  • Email authentication monitoring. SPF and DMARC checked daily. Better Stack does not do this, and it is the failure that disables your alerting itself.
  • Domain registration expiry as a first-class monitor with incidents and alerting.
  • Free. Not a limited free tier that pushes you to upgrade at 10 monitors — free, with all seven monitor types, all four channels, reminders and second opinion included.
  • No seat pricing. Add your whole team to a workspace at no cost.
  • No upsell path. There is no paid tier to be nudged toward, because none exists.
  • Plain failure text. Alerts say no MX record contains "route2.mx." or certificate expires in 12 days, not a status code and a colour.

How to choose

Use Better Stack if downtime costs you money, someone is on call, you need regional confirmation, or you need a status page your customers subscribe to. Those are real requirements and WhatPing does not meet them.

Use WhatPing if you are a developer or a small team who wants the expiry-and-drift failures covered — domain, certificate, DNS, SPF — without a bill, and one probe location is enough for what you’re watching.

Use both if you already pay for Better Stack: point WhatPing at your domain registration and your email authentication, which Better Stack does not cover, and let it monitor your Better Stack account’s own domain while you’re there.
